Chic Fil A Reflection
Today in Lights Academy, Don Griffin from our local Chic Fil A came to talk to us about running a business and he also talked a little on interviewing skills.
I found it really cool to see how much goes into building or starting a business. I also thought it was interesting to get to know Mr. Griffin.
Mr. Griffin grew up in Pennsylvania. He graduated from the Navy in 1984 and spend 10 years flying as a navigator to find Russian submarines. Eventually he was hired for fresh express, a company responsible for creating the technology to be able to bag salads and sell them in grocery stores. He went to church with a guy who owned a Chic Fil A and was convinced to apply for his own. His advice to anyone starting a business, or even choosing their career would be to “Find your passion. Figure out what you love to do, and then figure out how to make a living doing it. Go for it. When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.”
He gave us a lot of background on Chic Fil A itself as well. I found this speaker to be very interesting because he spoke a lot about how you can show your faith through a business, and still be successful. He spoke a lot about ‘second mile service’ which is going above and beyond to make the customer happy. Chic Fil A does this by bringing your food to your table, but coming by and refilling your drinks, and by being super friendly with every encounter. About a week later we took a trip to Chic Fil A to see if they were following through with their values, and we were pleased. They showed second mile service and were very friendly our whole visit, despite the busy lunch hour.
We also quickly ran through some interview techniques and I think that was the most helpful thing of the whole class. We learned that it was important to make eye contact, have a good handshake, and to be personable. This was one of the best speakers we had in my opinion because we got a lot of information that will be helpful as we get jobs and work throughout the rest of our lives.
