Problem Solving Project: How to Prevent Music Piracy
I chose to do research on music piracy and how to stop it, because I'm interested in the music industry. From this research I got to learn a lot about the industry and how musician and record companies are paid. I began solving this problem for all musicians, mainly with local musicians in mind, that have trouble profiting with so many illegal downloading and sharing sites.
Above is my log of what I learned and the process of research. I mainly used google to find most of my answers. There were a few sites that would give direct information on their profits and how they get/share their music. It was harder however to get personal opinions from people because they often wouldn't be able to supply good answers as to why they felt the way that they did about music piracy. I also found that not many of the people I tried to talk with had any personal experience with music piracy.
The best solution that was proposed was that artists should drop record companies altogether, since record labels take so much of their initial profit from legal downloads, and they should sell their tracks for less money, but get the same amount of money, because it would be a direct profit to the artist.
In order to further pursue this project and to come up with a solution, I would have to research more about the finances of making a record or a track and the profits of record labels. I would also have to see the difference in production with a label verses production independently.
